Teaching Experience & Volunteering

My practicum, work and volunteer experiences that have helped me prepare for and guide me toward my future career as a teacher are so valuable to me.

My first teaching placement at Medway High School in Arva, Ontario allowed me to be fully immersed in the world of teaching. I had a wonderful associate teacher and had the opportunity to teach the following courses
ENG1P- Grade nine Applied English
ENG2P- Grade ten Applied English
ENG4U- Grade twelve University preparation English

My final teaching placement at Centennial Central Public School in Arva, Ontario gave me the opportunity to work in a grade 8 classroom. I was able to instruct a class of 26 students in English, Geography, Science, Math, Art, and Physical Education.

My year teaching English as a foreign language in South Korea was my first opportunity to be a classroom teacher. I had the chance to work with students from all age groups and levels. My academic background in university focused on literature studies, and this experience allowed me to teach the basics of reading, writing, listening, speaking and vocabulary building. I was able to experiment with different classroom management techniques, teaching and assessment styles. I will never forget my time teaching in Korea, because it is what confirmed my passion for teaching, and let me know that I was on the right path.

My time mentoring with the Go Girls Program of Big Brothers Big Sisters allowed me to see the importance of character development in schools. While academics and curriculum expectations are an important part of our job as educators, forming personal relationships with these grade eight girls really highlighted the importance of social development in schools. I hope to be able to integrate safe schools content into my curriculum based lesson plans in order to help students to engage with concepts that may not be normally covered such as body image, self-esteem, relationships, and peer pressure.
